Choosing the Right Orthodontic Pacifier
Dr Gordon Tam B.D.S. (Singapore)
Here are some guidelines for choosing an orthodontic pacifier:
1. Look for a one-piece model that has a soft nipple. The nipple of the pacifier usually made in either latex or silicone.
Latex nipples are softer and more flexible, easily accepted by your baby. However they are not as durable as silicone. You may need to replace them more frequently.
Silicone nipples are firmer and easier to clean.
2. The shield should be at least 1 & 1/2 inches wide, so that the child cannot put the entire pacifier into his or her mouth. Also, the shield should be made of firm plastic with holes for ventilation.
3. Make sure the pacifier is dishwasher safe. You will need to get more than one orthodontic pacifier for your baby, it will come in handy when the other one is still in the dishwasher.
4. Orthodontic pacifiers come in different sizes. For your baby’s comfort, make sure the pacifier is of the right size.
5. You may find a variety of nipple shapes. Try different shapes until you find the one your baby prefers.
6. Buy some extra orthodontic pacifiers. Pacifiers can be misplaced easily or falling on the floor or street when you need them most.
7. Do not secure orthodontic pacifier around your baby’s neck or hand, or to your baby’s crib. It is not wise to risk serious injury.
8. Do not use the nipple from a baby bottle as a pacifier. Baby may get choke if the whole nipple go into the mouth.
9. Orthodontic pacifiers wear and tear over time. Inspect them every once in a while to see whether the rubber has changed color or torn. Replace them if necessary.
